Overview
"The East Carolina University/ECU Health Medical Center Emergency Medicine Residency Program has been training highly competent emergency physicians for over 40 years, producing clinical and academic leaders in Emergency Medicine. We believe that we have a very challenging clinical environment in which to train, and have developed a structured and comprehensive curriculum to optimize your individual success in completing residency.
Our emergency department has an annual census of about 130,000 visits, serving over 2 million people from the large geographic area of eastern North Carolina, spanning 29 counties, with many of these counties having relatively few healthcare resources. The following are some of the features about our facility:
- 58 bed main Emergency Department, with 8 additional psychiatric bed observation area
- 16 bed Pediatric Emergency Department
- One of the busiest PCI centers in the state
- The only Level I trauma center in the catchment area for both adults and pediatrics
- Designated Stroke Center
We have a very involved EMS faculty with an EMS curriculum that provides residents with the opportunity to ride along with physicians in our EMS physician’s vehicle which responds to local county emergencies. Residents can also ride along with ECU Health EastCare, a Critical Care Transport agency, in one of our five helicopters which are some of the busiest air medical helicopters in the US or with our ground units stationed throughout Eastern North Carolina. Residents can also participate in mass gatherings like serving as medical staff for ECU football games or local air shows and participate in disaster deployments with our very active State Medical Assistant Team.
Greenville offers a refreshing contrast to our bustling emergency medicine training program. Greenville is a warm, friendly city of just over 91,000 people, with East Carolina University as one of the prominent features of the area. Activities year round include sports, camping, hiking, fishing, a vibrant arts community, and legendary barbeque! Greenville offers a more resident-friendly cost of living relative to many other cities, with far fewer hassles associated with more urban areas."
