Background
- Staphylococcal enterocolitis is an acute inflammatory condition of the intestines caused by Staphylococcus aureus
- Can occur after antibiotic use disrupts normal flora
- Also associated with enteral feeding and post-surgical states
Clinical Features
- Profuse watery diarrhea
- Abdominal cramping
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fever
- Dehydration
Differential Diagnosis
Infectious diarrhea
Evaluation
- Stool culture
- CBC, BMP for dehydration assessment
Management
Antibiotic Dosing
Adult
- Vancomycin 125-500mg PO q6h
Pediatric
- Vancomycin 40mg/kg/day PO divided q6h (max 2g/day)
Disposition
- Admission for severe dehydration or systemic toxicity
- Outpatient management for mild cases
