Background
Causes
- gram-positives
- Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Staphylococcus aureus
- gram-negatives
- Haemophilus influenzae
Diagnosis
- More abrupt onset (than viral)
- Normally spreads bilateral within 48hrs
- Morning crusting
DDx
Treatment
- Topical ophthalmi antibiotic
- Erythromycin, OR
- Bacitracin/Polymyxin B
- If contact lens wearer, cover for pseudomonas
- discontinue lens wearing
- Topical fluoroquinolone
- Eg: Cipro drops 10D OU
- If contact lens wearer, cover for pseudomonas
- Follow-up (if no improvement) 3-4 days
- Closer follow-up in young children and the debilitated (obtain cultures)
- Ointment for children
- Drops for adolescents/adults
