Definitions

ARF: Recent (over hours to days) decline in renal function

Oliguria: UO < 400cc/day

Anuria: UO < 100cc/day

Azotemia: Elevation in BUN

Uremia: Clinical syndrome resulting from the adverse effects of renal failure on other organ systems eg cardiovascular, central nervous, GI, heme, immunologic

Etiology

  1. Prerenal
    1. BUN/Cr ratio > 20
    2. FeNa < 1%
    3. FeUN <35%
  2. Intrarenal
    1. FeNa <>1%
    2. FeUN >50%
  3. Post-obstructive

Work-up

  1. Urinalysis
  2. Urine sodium, creatinine, urea (for those on diuretics)
  3. Foley
